Rebuild the connection to nature

Research reveals that children are spending less and less time outdoors. The average child spends something like 7 and ½ hours a day in front of a glowing screen and less than 30 minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play. I started to worry that our landscape, our “neighbourwood” – as I like to call it – is becoming part of a foreign country – it is becoming unknown to us and to our children. If your childhood was anything like mine, you were often told “it’s too nice out there, let’s get out and play”. I grew up in a small town and never had to be asked twice to leave the house and get on my bike and ride for an hour, or just walk by the fields. As a somewhat shy and implicit girl, I gained a great deal of peace and self-awareness spending unstructured time in nature. Even now I still find it a great way to recharge my batteries and fresh my mind. I believe children need to rebuild/strengthen a connection to the nature world and regain the balance between their studies in school and play, particularly “nature-based” play, which is what XY Learning strike to offer.
